The Cemetery’s development was initiated at the two stages for economic efficiency.
It took about six and half years for the 1st stage to be completed from April 1979 until November 1985.
The 2nd stage of development focused on additional expansion of graveyard and construction of buildings from 1979 to 2003.

The 1st stage of Graveyard Development

Daejeon National Cemetery was developed in the wake of limited capacity of Seoul National Cemetery. Construction started on April 1st in 1979 and it was completed on November 13th 1985. Only Graveyard development at that time was sized with 380,982m2.

The 2nd Stage of Graveyard Development
Outline
After the 1st stage of development, this National Cemetery faced growing demand of grave areas following
the increasing number of aged veterans death. It is very natural that the next development plan should be initiated and set out for future-based graveyard expansion coupled with natural beauty and environmental protection.

- 2002.11.12 : the 2nd Graveyard for Generals and Admirals and the 4th Graveyard for Patriots
- 2004.6.28 : Graveyard for Heads of State
- 2005.12.31 : the 3rd Graveyard for Servicemembers
- 2008.12.22 : Extra Graveyard developed
